Our Commitment to Inclusion at (ISC)² Security Congress 2023

As the world’s foremost association of cybersecurity professionals representing more than 365,000 members, candidates and associates worldwide, (ISC)² is committed to ensuring our profession reflects the diversity of the world we serve. We believe that our mission of a safe and secure cyber world depends on a diverse, equitable and inclusive cybersecurity workforce.  

We want to be clear that we stand against legislative measures that not only limit, but in some instances, outlaw the freedom of expression and identity for any underrepresented community. Limiting the freedom of expression and access to healthcare for those in the LGBTQIA+ community in Tennessee – the location of this year’s (ISC)² Security Congress conference – is deeply troubling. No one should feel threatened, persecuted or excluded due to discriminatory laws.

We are 100% committed to ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for everyone attending Security Congress. When concerned cybersecurity professionals brought this new legislation to our attention, we immediately evaluated all options, including a full withdrawal of Security Congress from Tennessee.

Following extensive and ongoing conversations with our host property, the Gaylord Opryland Resort (part of the Marriott Group), the Nashville Convention and Visitor Corp., local LGBTQIA+ organizations and the Nashville mayor’s office, we believe Nashville is an inviting, welcoming community. City and hospitality industry leaders continue to advocate for inclusive public policy on both the local and state level. We are confident our host property shares our commitment, with the Gaylord’s parent company earning a ninth consecutive perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s Corporate Equality Index, the foremost benchmark of corporate policies and practices related to LGBTQIA+ workplace equality. Moreover, with the help of the Nashville Convention and Visitors Corp., we are building a network of local LGBTQIA+ leaders to help us identify safe and welcoming destinations for everyone attending the conference.

We are working closely with all our local partners to ensure a great experience for all, including:

• Holding all Security Congress events at the resort or at a location that affirms a verifiable commitment to inclusion and safety of its guests
• Convening a working group to ensure Security Congress is a safe place to encourage attendance from women, the LGBTQIA+ community and people of color
• The working group also will discuss other ways we can continue to support the LGBTQIA+ cybersecurity community today and in the future
• Confirming that Gaylord policy empowers guests to use restrooms for the gender with which they identify
• Setting aside space for a quiet room for those who need safe spaces during the event

After careful consideration, we are confident that the (ISC)² Security Congress in Nashville will offer the welcoming, safe and inclusive atmosphere our attendees have enjoyed at Congress for nearly 15 years. We hope to see you there.
